Edith Raab Chucker Birth: Aug. 28,
1929 Death: Dec. 14,
2007 Edith Raab Chucker, longtime resident of Clifton Forge,
passed away on Friday, December 14, 2007. Edith was born in Connecticut on
August 28, 1929, and always took pride in her background of growing up on a
working farm. Her father, Isadore Raab, also held a position as an aircraft
designer, and Edith's mother, Martha Weber Raab, taught her two girls the
skills of running a business. Edith's career as a nurse started in
Middletown, Connecticut with special training in New London to become a nurse
anesthetist. To get through all those years of training, Edith fondly
remembered taking on various jobs; she was a model, and she drove stock cars,
and was paid for it. She trained to get a pilot's license and kept up her
valid license for many years. As a certified nurse anesthetist, Edith Raab
went to work at The University of Virginia, where she met Dr. George Chucker
who was in training to become a radiologist. They married on April 26, 1953.
It was his appointment as radiologist at the then Chesapeake and Ohio Hospital
that brought the couple to Clifton Forge, where they became beloved members
of the community. In 1977, she earned her Bachelors of Arts from Stephens
College in Columbia, Missouri. Edith Chucker used her training and business
abilities to establish a school for nurse anesthetists at Emmett Memorial
Hospital and later Alleghany Regional Hospital, and many of her graduates
kept in frequent touch with her. She was also a certified examiner for the
National Board to test for the Nurse Anesthetist Exam, and she served as an
expert witness in court cases in her field. With a special talent in
financial planning, she lent her expertise to local organizations. She was
most instrumental in the planning, fund raising, and building of the Clifton
Forge Public Library, and she was active in the Main Street organization in
their downtown beautification efforts. She delighted in her role in the
"Breakfast with Santa" event each year. Edith was a member of
Temple Emanuel in Roanoke, and she served as a financial consultant to
several small businesses. Edith loved this area with it's rural beauty,
safety, and warm-hearted people. She supported many local causes, and will be
missed by her town and her many friends. In addition to her parents, she was
preceded in death by her husband, Dr. George N. Chucker in 1993. She had
recently relocated to Richmond to be closer to her children. They are Ingrid
Kimberlee Chucker of Virginia Beach, Raab Chucker Reibach of Richmond, and
George Barton Chucker and wife Michelle of Richmond. Edith delighted in the
activities of her grandchildren, whom she saw frequently. They are Ashleigh
Reibach, a student at Franklin and Marshall University, Lori Reibach,
attending the Purnell School of Performing Arts, Maxwell Chucker at the
Governor's School in Norfolk, and the youngest ones, Hatcher Chucker and
twins Easton Chucker and Jordan Chucker, students at The Collegiate School in
Richmond. Edith's sister, Harriet Raab Turner, and husband Buzz, now live in
Winter Springs, Florida. The body was interred in the family plot of King David
Memorial Garden in Falls Church, VA. Burial: King David Memorial Garden Falls Church Fairfax County Virginia, USA Richmond Times-Dispatch (VA) - December 20, 2007 Deceased Name: CHUCKER , Edith Raab Edith Raab, longtime resident of Clifton Forge, Va.,
